FORWARD-THINKING ACADEMIC ENTERS CYBERSPACE TO HELP FOREIGN STUDENTS PREPARE FOR UK WORK PLACEMENTS

A former academic has paid tribute to his previous employers at Staffordshire University for their help in setting up his new venture.

Jim O'Neill left his post as Head of the Innovation Management Centre in July 2004, and established the European Business Exchange – the only UK firm to place French students with small and medium-sized enterprises on this side of the Channel.

And he is now using the university's resources, including workspace at a start-up unit at Staffordshire University 's E2 The Station, to introduce the students to the British business culture and prepare them for their placements – before they even arrive in the Potteries !

He said: “I have a lot to thank the university for, because without them I would not have premises or the ability to train students before they arrive in this country.

“For instance, we guarantee students an interview with a UK employer, and can now use video conferencing to do this. Companies can get to know the students via video email.

“We have also developed an e-learning module, which covers subjects like UK law and business ethics – things they have little knowledge of when they first get here.

“And it will give them a better grasp of the language, meaning they can hit the ground running when they start their placement.”

The company received help from the university's Enterprise Fellowship Scheme (EFS), which offers a 12month placement with financial support (via a grant or a loan), free training and development to improve business skills, and mentoring support.

EFS Business Development Manager Rachel Baker said: “It's been fantastic to have Jim on board the EFS.

“He gained a lot from the support but has given a lot back too by sharing his wealth of experienceand knowledge with newer companies on the scheme.

“We have a great entrepreneurial community at E2 and Jim has helped us to build that.”

EBE will be expanding this year, to help students in Spain , Germany and even China secure placements.

They have already placed students with a number of firms, including Mateque in Leeds, Trelawney in Leamington Spa, and Milestone Communications in Stoke-on-Trent .
